Ethio Chicken, is a poultry breeding farm and hatchery, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The private company was founded in 2010 and its main objective is to produce affordable chicks, eggs and meat for its citizens through production partnerships with local smallholders. Ethio Chicken took the opportunity and targets to improve nutrition, enhance rural farmer livelihoods, and create income opportunities for customers and partners in a country where annual per capita consumption of chicken is very low (600g compared to 2.3kg in the rest of sub-Sahara Africa, according to the Global Alliance Nutrition report (2017). Today, the company boasts of 152 employees and growing investment from other investors.
AECF invested early into the company and provided finance and technical support for designing the business model, transitioning into larger markets and geographical regions.
As a result of this support, Ethio Chicken scaled up, identified more opportunities and created new lines of businesses and agencies. By end of 2018, Ethio Chicken had sold more than 16 million chicks, distributed 20, 000 MTs of feed and employed 929 people directly, and thousands more indirectly.
“We aim to exploit the 115 million Ethiopia’s population and to become a truly pan African company with presence in the rest of sub-Sahara Africa.” – Dr Fseha Tesfu, Sales Director, Ethio Chicken
